The new permanent exhibition is installed in one of the former prisoners’ barracks. It conveys both the history of Neuengamme Concentration Camp and the culture of remembrance post-1945. The exhibition dramaturgy takes the building’s original structure with its huge accommodation halls and transforms it into a key exhibit.

The prisoners’ three-tier bunk beds are made into a leitmotif for the exhibition design. The delicate and transparent construction made of structural steel angles sets the scene for the space’s overall impact.

Bound in red cloth, the memories of former prisoners are made prominent within the exhibition. They are indispensable in terms of providing first-hand accounts of everything that happened at the camp.

The exhibition is multilingual throughout (German, English, French, Russian).

Records of trials, documents and biographies give a detailed account of the SS members posted at Neuengamme Concentration Camp. This research exhibition is located in the former SS garages of Neuengamme Concentration Camp.

The exhibition design reflects the structure of the main exhibition, creating a shelving system for document files which suggests associations with the camp administration. A study atmosphere is created, which is juxtaposed with the functional garage building. The facts and information relating to the SS members who worked in the concentration camp are contrasted with the statements of former prisoners about the SS guards.

Prison and Memorial: Documentation of a Contradiction

PROJECT DETAILS
  • Client: Neuengamme Concentration Camp Memorial, Hamburg Cultural Authority
  • Display space: 35 linear metres
  • Completion: May 2007

In cooperation with the office of Anat Frumkin, Hamburg

Between 1948 and 2006, two prisons were built by the city of Hamburg on the site where Neuengamme Concentration Camp once stood. A section of the wall from the former prison “Justizvollzugsanstalt IX” which still stands today now hosts an exhibition documenting the conflict surrounding the erection and subsequent demolition of the prison at the site.

Between 1939 and 1945, camp prisoners endured unbearable labour conditions in the neighbouring clay pits, where they were made to extract clay for the concentration camp’s brick production.
